In 1940, the German Army received more than 800 of the very popular French Renault R35 new generation light tanks, which were renamed the Panzerkampfwagen 35 R 731 (f), or Pz.Kpfw. 35 R, a few months later. The vehicles turret was too cramped, and its armament was considered weak even for secondary operations. As a result, several tank units received the converted Pz.Kpfw. 35 R tanks with turrets from captured Soviet T-26 vehicles. It is unknown where or by whom these vehicles were reworked.
